Weight and Your Health

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of your weight relative to your height.  The BMI formula is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.  You can slide the tabs below to indicate your height and weight, or enter your weight and height into the dark grey boxes at the bottom to calculate your BMI.

BMI Categories:

  • Underweight = <18.5
  • Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
  • Overweight = 25-29.9
  • Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

Obese individuals are in a high risk category for obesity related diseases.  Besides being overweight or obese, there are additional risk factors to take into account when assessing your health.  Be sure to discuss your BMI and these other factors with your physician:

  • waist measurement of over 40 inches in men and over 35 inches in women
  • high blood pressure
  • high “bad” LDL-cholesterol
  • low “good” HDL-cholesterol
  • high triglycerides
  • high blood glucose
  • family history of heart disease
  • personal history of physical inactivity

For people who are obese (BMI greater than or equal to 30) or those who are overweight (BMI of 25 to 29.9) with two or more of the above risk factors, weight loss is recommended.  Your risk of developing obesity related diseases can be reduced by losing even just 10% of your current weight.
